Sugar Coated: The Sweet and Dark Sides of American Confections

Sugar Coated: Sweet and Dark Sides of American Confections is a collaborative exhibition project featuring the collection of Shane’s Confectionary in Philadelphia. The exhibit is meant to explore the dualities present in the production, consumption, and advertisement of American confections from the mid-19th through mid-20th centuries, and how those relationships with our relationship with sweets today. Our six-person team collaborated for five weeks to develop the exhibit, a series of programs and interactives for visitors to learn about the impact confection have had on American society. Visitors will also discover confection production methods typical in home and factory settings. In the end, we set out to connect the way people consumed confections in the past to the way they enjoy sweets in the present.
